There are many contenders for best apres ski in France. Val Thorens, Chamonix, Meribel and Val d”Isere all deliver serious post-lift action. Possibly under the radar a bit, it is a fair shout for Morzine-Avoriaz to be shortlisted for the best apres ski in France. Here’s why:
La Folie Douce Avoraiz
The biggest addition to Morzine-Avoriaz après ski in the last 10 years – there isn’t a day in winter without a major party on the terrace. Located directly on the slopes, this is a Morzine-Avoriaz institution now with the atmosphere building throughout the afternoon. Closing time is chaos and part of the après ski ritual – find skis. Find skis, locate the lift and pack on to the ski bus.
Le Tremplin
An icon of Morzine après ski, the Tremplin terrace (currently a tent during the hotel redevelopment) has one of the best positions of any après ski bar. It sits at the bottom of a reasonably steep piste back to the resort. Straight as an arrow and steep, you can watch over the top of a beer as yard sales find their way back to valley level. Some skiers rise to the challenge and try for a bit of speed – it is classic viewing. There is a DJ in a cable car and a great atmosphere throughout the winter months.
The Cavern Bar
Live music is everywhere in Morzine, and The Cavern is one of the originals. Located in the heart of the village, there are multiple performances each day through the winter, creating a fantastic atmosphere and offering a different slant on the ubiquitous DJ sets.
Bar Robinson
To prove that Morzine is no one-trick pony, Robbos is almost 100 years old and still serves drinks to locals. Guests have twigged that its only tap beer comes in at 6.9% volume, and it is all part of the Morzine pilgrimage to drop and sample this fine, eastern France drop.
